Southern Cross manufactures and sells its own proprietary leak detection equipment under the Flame Pack and '46 Hawk brand names. The Flame Pack was developed in the early 1970s and uses flame ionization to detect small amounts of methane or natural gas seeping up from underground distribution lines. The '46 Hawk is a recent innovation using laser technology to detect methane or gas leaks. The '46 Hawk is an exciting new development since it eliminates the need for a fuel supply or contained flame that is found in the Flame Pack model.
